HEADACHES, TYPES, TREATEMENT AND MANAGEMENT
What is Headache?
Headaches are a prevalent and often debilitating condition characterized by pain or discomfort in the head, scalp, or neck. The pain can vary greatly in intensity, duration, and location, affecting daily life and overall well-being. Here is a closer look at the characteristics and experiences associated with different types of headaches:
Tension Headaches
Tension headaches are the most frequent type, typically described as a dull, aching sensation across the entire head. The pain often feels like a tight band or pressure around the forehead or at the back of the head and neck. These headaches can be episodic, occurring sporadically, or chronic, occurring more than 15 days a month. Alternatively you can watch the video below from Dr. Bhupesh Kumar about the same.
Migraines
Migraines are severe, throbbing headaches usually confined to one side of the head. They can last anywhere from a few hours to several days and are often accompanied by other symptoms such as:
Nausea and Vomiting: Many individuals experience gastrointestinal distress.
Sensory Sensitivity: Increased sensitivity to light, sound, and sometimes smell.
Visual Disturbances: Some people experience auras, which are visual phenomena such as flashing lights, zigzag patterns, or blind spots preceding the headache.
Migraines can significantly impair daily activities and often require specific treatments to manage.
Cluster Headaches
Cluster headaches are among the most painful types of headaches, characterized by severe, piercing pain usually around one eye or one side of the head. These headaches occur in clusters or groups, with each headache lasting from 15 minutes to three hours. They can occur multiple times a day for weeks or months, followed by periods of remission. Symptoms often include:
Red, Watery Eyes: The eye on the affected side may become red and teary.
Nasal Congestion or Runny Nose: Similar to sinus-related symptoms.
Restlessness: People experiencing cluster headaches often find it difficult to stay still and may pace or rock back and forth.
Sinus Headaches
Sinus headaches are caused by inflammation and congestion in the sinuses, leading to a deep, constant pain in the cheekbones, forehead, or bridge of the nose. The pain often intensifies with sudden head movements or straining and is usually accompanied by other sinus symptoms such as:
Runny or Stuffy Nose: Nasal discharge or blockage is common.
Fever: A mild to moderate fever may be present.
Facial Swelling and Pressure: A feeling of fullness or swelling in the face.
